What I Wore: Road Trip to Chi-town

My 4 year old son is train obsessed! He has been a total train addict since he was a year and a half old. Every car ride we are looking for train tracks, train bridges, train yards and of course trains! Last summer he was able to ride the subway a ton during our family trip to Boston and has been asking to go back ever since!

This past Saturday, Adam and I woke up at 4:15am and pulled the kids out of bed for a very impromptu road trip to Chicago. Main objective: ride the L. Depending on traffic we are anywhere from a 4.5 hour to a 6 hour car ride from the Windy City. The last time we had visited, I was pregnant with my son. Even though we were only going for the day, we were still eager to explore!

We planned on staying until after an early dinner so I knew wearing layers would be important. This chambray jumpsuit had just arrived and seemed like the perfect item to wear. Especially since the sleeves can roll down to full length. (I ordered it last week for just $12.50 but sadly they are sold out. There is this cute off the shoulder version though!) I threw my utility vest over for the morning. Popped on some gladiator sandals and was good to go!

We arrived around 10:30am. We parked the car at Navy Pier and headed straight towards the nearest subway station to purchase passes and ride the rails! There was a quick pit stop at Stan’s Donuts before we hopped on the line. Pretzels for A and a chocolate sprinkle donut for the little man. We ended up meeting A’s cousin for brunch at Crosby’s Kitchen in Lakeview. If you ever get a chance to go here, you have to order the monkey bread! They bring it straight from the oven, all gooey and warm- it’s a must have treat!

After brunch we did a little shopping; I popped into Athleta and Lou & Gray since those stores are not available locally to me. I fell in love with this criss cross sweatshirt dress, this pullover and these moto pants! I also really loved this light weight bell sleeve top and these joggers. All perfect for early fall!

We hopped on the L for another round of subway rides back into downtown. We spent our afternoon at the Chicago Hot Dog Festival that was happening at Lincoln Park. Bounce houses, live music, vendor booths, adult beverages and so many types of hot dogs! I’m a little bummed we did not take any pictures at the hot dog costume booth.

It was such a beautiful day that we walked along the shoreline to get back to our car at Navy Pier. Fully exhausted, the kids slept the whole ride home. It was a long day but so much fun!

Current Trend Love: The Romper Maxi

Hope ya’ll are having a wonderful weekend! I’m super pumped to spend some time with my bestie who is in town!

I love rompers. I love maxis. And I definitely love this maxi romper! Have you seen these this season? They are so super fun!

I purchased this fun dress a few months back in anticipation for summer and let me tell you, it’s been on repeat! It’s so easy to throw on with gladiator sandals or dress it up a bit more with some block heels. I wore it out for a date night with the hubs. I wore it last weekend for dinner at a friend’s house. I’m wearing it this weekend for a fun day adventure with my bestie and the fam. And I definitely plan to pack it for our trip to Miami Beach next month!

There are so many versions of this maxi romper out right now. I love this white one and olive one (both under $30). This strapless version in blush is so adorable. Or a fun floral pattern with the cold shoulder!  A long sleeve version would be so fun for early fall too!

July Poshmark Closet Adds

Hey babes! Just a quick share of the new listings in my Poshmark closet to share. I listed a handful of great work tops that are perfect for these hot summer days! Everything is listed under $10 and in excellent condition! Check them out!

A cute sleeveless ruffle pink top.  Looks great with your favorite black dress pants or jeans!

A similar blouse but in yellow and a back zipper for some extra flare! I love pairing this bright hue with white denim or a grey skirt like this one.

A fun geo print sleeveless button down. I love to pair this with ankle trousers and a blocked heel for a polished professional look.

An embroidered gauze tunic that would make a great transition piece into early fall! Pair it with distressed jeans and gladiators now and then leggings, booties and a cardi in September!

Check out the rest of my closet too! I’ve got some great items like these kills BCBG heels!

Oversize Sunnies Have My Heart

When it comes to picking out sunglasses I always gravitate towards oversized frames. I have full cheeks so the bigger the better for sunglass frames. Picking a larger frame keeps my cheeks from squishing up into the bottom of the lense- which avoiding that is a total win. Any small step to keep me feeling like I sorta have it together is definitely a bonus.

I stick with traditional shapes for my shades: Oval and Aviator are my go to style. I know these two styles work well for my face and that they will never really go out of style.

I also try to spend $50 or less on my sunglass because I’m human- I will lose, scratch or break my sunglasses. I’ve also learned that super cheap sunglasses (unless it’s like a mega-markdown) are totally not worth paying so little. I once bought a multi-pack of aviators from Amazon, like $6 for 5 pairs. I knew the reviews said they were awful but I bought them anyway. The metal was so thin that they never stayed straight. The act of taking them off & folding to put away would bend the metal. I’m not sure about you but I like my sunglasses to be straight on my face.  My favorite places to snag solid inexpensive sunglasses are Kohls, JcPenny or Express. Like these, these, and these. All great options for under $30!

If you like solid frames and a little funk, check out Nora NYC. I’m currently wearing their Brooklyn shade in gold + brown color. I was attracted to the subtle ombré, full front lense and studded frames. I also really like the Manhattan in Coffee and Champagne. I had to adjust the arms at the bend a little to keep them on my face but I think they look & feel great! All of their shades run right around the $50 price point. They have traditional styles but also some super unique frames for some serious street style. Best part, you can snag 10% off any pair with my code NewShades!!

Closet Find: The Chambray Purse

Happy Friday friends!

I wore this outfit a few weeks back to a happy hour event A’s department was hosting. My outfit stemmed around finding this purse in my closet. The baby was napping and for whatever reason I decided to dig through the two containers that keep my purse collection over the years. I found this cute summery purse that I swear to you, I probably bought from Target in 2005!

See the handle? That white with stripes is actually what the purse looks like but I decided to flip it inside out when I saw the inside was chambray. Let’s be real, did anyone know what chambray was in ’05? Talk about a total find right in my closet!W

With my cute “new” purse in hand I looked at the rest of my closet and paired it with a few recently purchased items. I paired it with my current favorite distressed jeans, a simple white off the shoulder top & cute huaraches. Just like that, I’ve got a brand new look just by shopping my closet!

That’s honestly the aspect about styling I enjoy the most! I love creating looks and hunting for pieces. For years, I was the girl who never wore an outfit more than once. Pieces, yes. Same look, no. Although when I hit 30, I told myself that’s ridiculous- and if I really love a look go ahead and wear it more than once!

I encourage you to dig around in your closet, see if there is something old you can make new again by adding a few NOW pieces. What might you create?

Peplum brings All the Feels

Peplums, I hope you never go out of style. I really wasn’t a huge fan when you circled back into trend few years ago- but now I’m in love with your flounce. Give me a sleeveless version of you, and it brings all the feels.

There’s just something about a sleeveless peplum top that makes me feel confident and ready to take on whatever the day brings! Peplum tops provide some body definition without being too tight. Seriously, this is one of the best silhouettes to hide that last bit of baby weight I’m trying to shake! Fun fact- I also wore this top a lot early in my pregnancy until I was ready to tell everyone I was expecting.

Pairing an olive peplum blouse with my favorite black skinny pants and a comfortable low wedge sandal makes a great look for the office. I love the v neck and zipper on the back on this top! I threw on a leather double wrap cuff, leather detailed collar necklace and gold studs to complete my look.

My blouse is a few years old from Wet Seal- which I believe is no longer in business. However I’ve rounded up a few that are around the same price point (under $30). This off-the-shoulder peplum top is super cute- not really work wear, but would be great for the weekend! This one shoulder peplum sweater is also super adorable; would be great paired with some skinny dress pants for early fall! For a version that is work appropriate, this lace one is so sweet; I really like it in blush. For a more casual look, I really love both the tank and long sleeve versions of this relaxed peplum-hem. I own both of these- I’d recommend sizing up to achieve the look on the model. (See a post about them here) And while I was browsing to link up for you babes, I stumbled across a chambray version that would be so great for fall! I’d pair it with some olive skinnies or black jeans!

3 Shoulder Show Looks for the Office

It’s July (my birthday month, woo!), and the year of the shoulder show game is STILL strong. What I’m loving the most about this trend is it’s flirting with all the different styles out there. Workout gear, casual, athleisure, formal, swimwear and even professional looks! I see so many adorable cold shoulder and off the shoulder tops that I would love to purchase but my reality is 5 out of 7 days a week my outfits adhere to my company’s dress code policy making some options not office friendly. I was really excited when I came across a few off the shoulder and cold shoulder tops that were more modest and professional!

I have three outfits to share today that are prefect for my 9to5- hopefully some #officestyleinspo for you!

First up is this white off the shoulder top. The poplin material makes this shirt structured and perfect for work-wear. How cute are the ties on the sleeves?

I kept my outfit simple by pairing with a classic navy trousers and nude slides. Added some jeweled stack bracelets and matching earrings to add a little something fun.

Next up is a cold shoulder button up! That’s right, you read right: cold shoulder + button up! This is like the most grown-up cold shoulder shirt I’ve seen! I was really excited to add this top to my closet.

I put it together with blush skinnies, nude strappy heels and popped in my favorite black diamond earring studs to complete this look! Ignore the wrinkles, that’s what happens when outfit pictures are taken after a full day of work. I have some white and black wide leg pants this top would look great with! I can’t wait to wear it with some distressed jeans for a night out!

Top | Pants | Heels (similiar) | Earrings | Ring

My last look to share includes this super cute ruffled cold shoulder blouse. It’s pretty sheer so I threw a cami underneath to make it work-appropriate. I think if I wear it on the weekend I’d skip the cami & just go for it.

I love the soft ruffle across the top and the airy sleeves! I combined these wide linen pants I purchased at Target many years ago with block heeled cognac sandals & a skinny navy belt. Added a pair of faux diamond earrings and this look is way stylish for the office!

Top | Pants (similiar) | Shoes | Earrings | Sunnies (similiar)| Ring | Watch | Belt

A few other office-friendly tops I’m loving include this ruffle mock turtleneck neck cold shoulder blouse- I love it in yellow but the navy is pretty too! This white off the shoulder button down would pair so well with a pencil skirt. A lace short sleeve cold shoulder blouse combined with white skinnies or a full skirt would be so cute! This key-hole front cold shoulder top would be great with jeans for casual Friday’s!

Closet Finds FTW

I’m not a hoarder of much of anything besides crafting and wardrobe pieces. I’m not kidding when I say I still have the skirt I wore to my high school graduation! I don’t wear it too often because I’m not really a skirt girl. It’s a basic cream colored modest mini skirt from Express that is such a wardrobe staple that I can’t part with it.  Then there are other items that aren’t such a basic piece that I have kept. If I’m being really honest with you- unless a piece gets ruined, doesn’t fit or just waaay out of style I keep it. Sometimes trends come full circle and a piece becomes a little gem find.

Like this dress.

Purchased in 2011 from Forever 21. I bought it for a trip to Beijing and loved the one shoulder aspect. One shoulder tops weren’t really in then making it a really unique find. But now, as you know, it’s the year of the shoulder show and this dress is right on trend.

I paired it with a cute panama straw hat, metal fringe earrings, nude slides and my beloved straw tote. It was the perfect summer outfit for a little Sunday Funday with the fam.

Since this dress is six years, it’s obviously no longer available for sale. This stripped ruffle one-shoulder maxi is a great alternative, and if you want to splurge this off the shoulder version is super adorable. I also like this one shoulder version as well!

5 Casual Summer Sandals This Season

I’m a sucker for shoes, who’s with me?
I’m a strong believer that a shoe can make or break an outfit. The shoe doesn’t even need to be a wow factor for this to happen- it just has to be the right shoe. For as much as I believe this for years I only wore some version of a flip flop in the summer in all the colors. I eventually graduated from a rainbow of plastic to a rainbow of leather but it wasn’t until a few years ago I started to embrace the various forms of the summer sandal. And now, I can’t stop! Of course I always have my favorite leather flip flops in nude and black but now I’ve branched out to different styles and trends.

To kick off my list of five casual sandals for your closet this season is this gladiator pair from last year. I’ve seen this pair in store which looks like an updated version. While browsing last week at online, I saw my exact pair that I bought last season! I’m glad I can link it up for you guys. Although I am totally loving the backless version too- a Mom at open swim had them on in silver and they were super cute! These are a heavy rotation for my shorts, maxi skirts and maxi dresses.

I’m also really loving the BCBGeneration fringe strappy sandal I picked up at the Cincinnati Premium Outlets a few months ago. The store was closing and having a MAJOR sale- I snagged these for $8. Can you believe it?! I can’t find them online (I’ve looked, even eBay!), but these and these are some cute similar styles. I’ve worn these black babes more than I thought I would. I wore them today with a cute short romper from Banana Republic and then earlier in the week to work with a maxi dress.

Hands down my favorite casual sandal this season are the cognac huarache sandals. I reach for this strappy sandal all the time. I love it with embroidered tops, a white tee or a cute maxi! They are pretty comfy and true to size. I usually size a half size up on flats, and on these- I wish I would have stuck to my normal shoe size because they stretched a little.

My favorite casual shoe for work are these slides in nude. I feel like I’m getting away with something amazing when I wear them. They are effortless to put on and the patent dresses them up a notch. Perfect for the office with pants, skirts, dresses and jeans! I also wore them on Memorial Day with shorts and this one shoulder ruffle top. Super cute!

A new recent casual sandal that I’m loving are these lace up wedges. I bought them to wear with cut off shorts, tank and blazer for dinner out with the bestie- and I’ve worn them so much more! They are super cute with jeans and shorts. Bonus, they are pretty comfortable for having a zipped heel!

Fashion Finds: The Round Summer Bag

Hi babes! How has everyone’s week been? Little miss has been sick (welcome to daycare!) so we’ve been pretty chill keeping her comfy. I finally bought an oil diffuser so I could get eucalyptus in the air to help with her congestion. And now, I’m obsessed! I’ve also been diffusing lavender at night and I don’t know I can sleep without it now. If you oil diffuse, I’d love to hear some oil combination suggestions!

Last night I was thinking about this blog. I’m still trying to figure out the best way to share my outfit details… If it’s better to list just a link, where I bought it from plus link, or list how much I paid or what. One thought that kept coming back to me was how I created this space as a place to empower the everyday female. Don’t get me wrong, if you can drop $80 on trendy summer sandals then get it girl. But if you’re like me, maybe you see that $80 price tag and think “man, I can get almost a whole outfit for that price”. This thought has brought me to what I hope to be a blog series called “Fashion Finds” where I’ll share some tips on how to get that look you love for less.

To kick the series off, I’m going to talk about this bag that I obsessed about for about a month. A few fashion/style bloggers I follow on Instagram have this bag. I love that it’s a circle with leather handles- it screams summer to me! However, being a Mom of two young kids I didn’t think spending over $200 on a light colored woven bag would be a smart financial move. To the internet I went searching for a similar style bag. This draw string straw bag is cute and so is this clutch but I really wanted a round bag. Just when I was about to give up I stumbled upon French Baskets.

French Baskets makes and sells straw bags & baskets. They are hand made by women in Morocco- like hand weaved, hand sewn leather handles, and hand adorned sequins and embroidery. Also did I mention their products are made out of eco-friendly materials? With over 10 years in the business, the owners (Geraldine & Karine) know how to make a quality product. The best part? The products are totally affordable! Like I’m talking well under $100 a basket/bag.

I opted for the Round Wicker Basket with Double Leather Handle; with shipping to the United States my cost was less than $60. It took a little over a week for the bag to arrive at my house and I may or may not have jumped up and down when the DHL delivery man pulled up.

While this bag is not practical for a long day out with an infant and preschooler; I’ve had no issues stuffing a few baby necessity items and snacks for big brother for dinner out or a quick errand. I’m very impressed with the durability and structure. The leather handles and straps are so soft! I will say it had a very earthy smell after being unboxed. It is real leather and palm leaves after all! Smell has since dissipated in case you are wondering.

If you’re loving the summer straw bags, or even want a cute well-made basket to store some throw blankets or toys, I highly recommend French Baskets. They have items for purchase on their website as well as their Etsy shop; they even do wholesale! I love my purchase and totally think you will too!

Outfit details: Bag. Jeans. Sweater (Loft, last season- similar, similar). Sandals (Target last season- similar). Sunnies (gift- similar). Earrings (those are sold out, but these are cute too!)
